GenTel Appoints Alex D. Vodenlich as President

Vodenlich brings more than 14 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and life science industries, most recently at PanVera LLC in Madison, WI (now Invitrogen). At PanVera, as Vice President of Contract Services, he developed and managed the company's profitable confidential contract protein production and assay development business for numerous multi-national clients. Vodenlich fully recognizes the importance of customer satisfaction and has extensive experience in successfully managing external collaborations. In addition, as PanVera’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, he successfully guided the rapidly growing company through all aspects of marketing, sales, communications, customer and technical support development. Before joining PanVera, Vodenlich was employed as a discovery research scientist with Pfizer Inc. and Abbott Laboratories working in protein biochemistry and receptor pharmacology. Vodenlich holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

According to Vodenlich, “GenTel’s mission is to successfully apply biotechnology to surfaces; the first application being biochips.” A biochip is a life science tool that enables the parallel analysis of sets of biological molecules immobilized on a surface as hundreds of unique, addressable, miniaturized test sites. “Although current biochip technology has enabled significant market expansion, demanding new biochip applications have outpaced the ability of current technologies,” says Vodenlich. GenTel’s uncompromising stance on high-quality substrates and its unsurpassed surface chemistry have created a solid foundation for developing reliable, dependable biochip products that will meet the emerging needs in the marketplace.

GenTel’s business strategy includes forming corporate alliances and partnerships to commercialize products resulting from its internal product development efforts. GenTel also intends to build upon its successful relationships with its University partners. According to Nelson, “Part of our strategy is to test our technology by integrating it into research projects at UW-Madison and other universities. This approach not only provides us with immediate feedback that we can quickly act on, but also stimulates great science.”

GenTel BioSurfaces, Inc. was founded in 2000 and is located in the University Research Park. GenTel holds exclusive licenses from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) on technologies developed in the laboratories of Chemistry Professors Robert Corn and Lloyd Smith. The Company’s technology is centered on surface chemistries for life sciences and encompasses detection techniques, microfluidics and applications development.
